He discovered the voice of Cesaria Evora in 1986. Two years later, he created the Lusafrica label. With this label, he made the Portuguese language of the Black Continent resonate throughout the world, and in particular in his native country: Cape Verde. The label now has more than 200 references and more than 2000 titles circulate in the world. In 2008, he launched his own music festival, the Kriol Jazz Festival, which quickly became a benchmark in West Africa.
In 2013, at the request of the Ministry of Culture of Cape Verde, he produced the Atlantic Music Expo, a music conference that takes place every year in April. José Da Silva then became a consultant for the creation of Universal Music in Africa after having also been a consultant for the creation of Sony Music Côte d'Ivoire in Africa, he became its president in 2016.
